Greater Reading Trails

GreaterReadingTrails.comSeveral years ago, the Conservancy convened a meeting of numerous organizations and agencies to begin to work together to connect all of Greater Reading’s fantastic, and under-utilized, natural resources. This partnership includes the Berks County Conservancy, Schuylkill River Heritage Area, RiverPlace Development Corporation, PA Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, William Penn Foundation, the City of Reading, and the Berks County Planning Commission. Together, the partnership prioritized nearly 90 projects to implement over the next few years that will result in easily accessible, well-marked recreational opportunities that connect numerous trails and natural resources in Greater Reading.

Through regular communication and coordinating our funding efforts for the projects, the partnership has begun to implement projects for the benefits of our residents and visitors in Berks. “We cannot accomplish this good work in Berks County alone”, said Kimberly Murphy, President of the Berks County Conservancy, “we value our partnerships and recognize that we can accomplish more as a team than any individual organization could do on its own”.

Overall plan vision:
Our vision for the Greater Reading Greenway & Recreation Hub initiative is that through strategically selected partnerships, we can assist the County in implementing the County Greenway, Park and Recreation plan for the metro region of Berks County specifically “Greater Reading”. By enhancing our public greenway and recreational opportunities it is our desire to see that influence and support our very active and professional economic development activities for the region. We believe that ultimately, through greater use and appreciation of these natural resources and recreational assets by our citizens, improved stewardship and interest in the environment will ensue.

Through this partnership, we have already completed several trails to be enjoyed by the public, and are currently working of the creation of more trails and connections. In addition to the trails we have featured on our website, please visit schuylkillriver.org and RiverPlacePA.org to learn more about enjoying the Schuylkill River in the heart of the Greater Reading Trails project.
